Synthetic Rubber.

b.

In the course of a letter to a financial contemporary, Mr. A. E. Exner writesome papers have lately published the "startling" news that the Germans are mak- ing synthetic rubber. Of coures they are, and no doubt have dones, so for a long time in small quanti- ties, as they cannot get the genuine article, owing to the blockade. 1, myself, some six- teen years ago, was for a time on

20 the board of a synthetic rabber manufacturing company in Ger-157 many. They worked a British invention, and produced a good article. It was not meant for surgical and medical uses, but 5. · was all right for tyres, golf balls, flooring, door-mate, combs, dc. b. The company would have been a great success if the plantation rabber industry had not made b such marvellous development în] b." the meantime. They could pro-) b.. duce the synthetic rubber at some- thing like 38, to 2s. 6d. a pound, the price of Pars at that time being very much. higter. Bat plantation rubber is now prob. daced at about le, a pound, and there is consequently no chance. left for synthetic rat ber, except temporarily under exceptional b. conditions as si present ruling in 2 Germany. Besides, there is one great difficulty connected with its production

Shanghai Cotton Market. Mr. A. B. Rosenfeld's Cotten Market Report for the week end- ing 17th February, 1916, ia a follows:- China Cction-Sines my last report was issued, there has been no decided change in the fundamental conditions of the market and a small business is

b. reported in China colton with.

At the b. some of our local mills, close the market presenting for the greater part a steady appeare ance. The yarn situation, I am pleased to say, shews a slight improvement, and with a little" more enquiry from the leading b. centres will no doubt infase some Tife in the textile trade. Local CODRUMSKE Sze reported to have sufficient cotton on hand to meet b immediate requirements, and are keeping aloof pending a decided improvement in the price of their spinninga. Arrivals of cotton are next to nothing, being only 30 to 40 bales of Shanghai Catton. Stocks of Tangchow on hand are about 20,000 bales, out! of which some 8,000 bales are of inferior quality. A small base mess is reported to have been; done in high grades of Indian Coston for March/April/May ship- ments, and from latest advices from India we are given to un- derstand that the market there is quite firm, as Japan has been baying quite heavily there. Our market, therefore, will be govern- Ged more or less by the yaza situation from day to day toge- ther with Mill takings and would advise buying on every break. Tons of the market, Swady.
