HONGKONG TRADE.

An lateresting Report.

Kelly's Monthly Troße Review (London)contains the following:-

A ponnisie here has lately complained at the unwillingnese of exporters to meet the customs and needs of Hongkong and `other Far Eastern ports, especial- ly in the matter of c.i.f. quotations for goods whereby a great abare of the business that this country could have had is now being placed elsewhere. Cif quota tions for. Hongkong are simt a necessity in view of the nature of the trade, as the imports of goods | of all kinds into Hongkong are handled more or less on the basis of commission.

It is reported here that Ameri- can manufacturers have lately secured a very strong bold on trade in Hongkong and South China, especially in many lines of goods which never before were obtained from the United States. The Americans first started with dyes, thereby inaugurating their importance in Hongkong, and followed up with supplies of other chemical producta Next came American window-glass and glæse- ware, both of which are now sold in Hongkong” in increasing qantities. Then followed Am erican hardware, supplanting the cheaper grade of German goods, and, it is said, "competing with the greatest success with the macre solid English manufactures." American soap and toilet supplies, perfumeries and the like, are now KSLL used in increasing quantities. R. E.
