EXPLANATORY REMARKS.

127. 5. 5 The Contingencies were not so large as estimated.

181.11.2 The 5th and 6th Clerks lately appointed did not draw the same Salaries as their Predecessors.

813.18.11 The decrease is to be explained by the reduced Salary drawn by the Acting Treasurer, and the 3rd and 4th Clerks.

762.19.1 The Acting Auditor's Salary, under instructions from the Secretary of State, was reduced to £250 per annum. The Contingencies, due in England, were not paid within the Year.

20.10. S No Sums expended under Contingencies.

The Salary and Allowance of the Acting Assistant Surveyor General were not provided in the Estimates. Also an Allowance for conveyance was sanctioned for the Superintendent of the Public Gardens.

157.11. 5 This amount was not expended in Contingencies and Allowances at the Ports as estimated.

110. 8. 8 A reduction in the Temporary Salaries and Allowances accounts for this decrease.

558. 7.10 During the year the Steamer Victoria was sold, and the expenses connected with her maintenance discontinued. Further, the vote for Contingencies of the Gunpowder Depôt was not expended.

120.7.10 A small portion of the vote for Contingencies only was expended, and the Services of a Messenger were not required.

247.13.11 The decrease is owing to a temporary amalgamation of the appointments of Clerk of the Supreme Court, and Clerk of the Summary Court. The Officer holding the appointment did not draw the full pay of the two Offices.

04.16.9% The half Salary of the Colonial Chaplain was not drawn for a portion of the year.

The increase is owing to certain Contingencies, such as Furniture and the refitting of two Class Rooms, at the Central School.
