Beater's correspondent at the Dardanelles, describing the evacuation of Suvla Bay and Auxac, of which he was an eye. witness, says that the whole operation was carried out under the eyes of 85,000 Tarks, who did not realise that the evacuation had began till hours after the last naval beach parties had slipped Philippine La-Per CHINHUA, h away. All equipment, transport, and ammonition, was removed, and nearly all the stores. The entire foros, with gear intact, was thus ready for service sleewhere. The Tarks on the higher ground all round had the whole of the Suvis Bay ares visible to them, except the actual beaches, while the main body of Australians was embarking. The beach was overlooked from Snipers Bridge, eleven hundred yards away. The question was, with bat proportion of loss it was possible to withdraw an army con- Fisting of three Anzac divisions and an Indian brigade occupying a front of 20,000 yards, which was hardly anywhere 500 yards (at some points it was only 50) from the enemy's position, and to embark it from beaches all of which were within field gan range of the enemy, some of them being with rifle range. If Temperature the enemy discovered what we were doing, he could follow Humidity up and compel a bloody rearguard action with abandonment of Wind Direction the wounded, with all guns, etc. still left on shore. Precautions were taken, however. Sach Turks as had no inkling fired their usual daily quantity of shell on Sunday with a little extra, 88 was best par mesecies on com tomary on Sundays; but they only wounded one man. By four o'clock on Monday morning practically everybody was off Parties, however, who were farthing the last stragglers, were as late ss sight o'clock. The medical staff, who had been left to tend the wounded--of whom, |------ however, there were none were also fetched; also men were left to ignite a few piles of provisions which had been abandoned. A huge mine was exploded on the neck between two ridges along which it was undesirable that the Turks should follow us. This had the desired effect; the Turks thought that the Australians were attacking and

They alas heavily bombarded Hiil 10, Chocolate Hill, and Lals Baba, where there was no longer s soul. They were still doing so when the battle ship on which I was, left the bay at nine o'clock. Our casualties.comprised an officer and two men woande? at Savis Bay and two men at Anzac, which was less than the daily average, as they were due to chance abots in no way intended to hin ler the operations, of which the Tarks were ignorant. It may be said that the evacuation did nos est s single casúsity.
