The war in Europe was the chief. factor in producing financial stringency and hampering the movement of cargo. The falling off affected brick tea, tas dust, | chinaware, com-hidae, fire crack- sis, melon saeda, ramie fibre, 10- bacco leaf, tallow, raw cotton and ground nuts. The loss of Garmaan. buyers accounted for the reduced ladings of hides, illow and ramie fibre, classes of goods which find their way to Europe. However, the total net value of the trade of the part in 1914 showed an in crasse as compared with 1913 of 5,172,266 Haikwan izela (6705;- 799). In 1914, of the 538,525 tons of steam shipping which re- presented the inter-port trade of Changaba (Chins), the share of British shipping was nearly 47 per cent, while the proportion of the trade carried in British bottoms was, as regarde valan, over. 42 per cent. This information in zfforded by Mr. Consul V. L. Sarage in a report on the trade of Changsha for last TREN He deplores the lack at anter. prise on the part of British merchants in general, which, he says, has hitherto left the develop mant of the valuable trade of Hanan to be done slmost entirely by their German competitor. The methods adopted by Gar many, he adds, cannot be reckoned as sound in all respects, and they are demoralising to the Chine But these methoda azu baand toa. great extent on economãe factorwa and conditions which do not apply, on the whole, to British trade and manufacturers, erán of
