BRITAIN'S REPLY TO AMERICA
December 20, 4.40 x.m According to a Washington message, Great Britain has sent a Memorandum to America denying a Press sistament to the effect that British merchants are profiting by war restrictions at the expense of American trade.
The Memorandum shows that British trade with neutrale infinite imal compared with American, while statistice prove that the latter has improved rather than bean injured through the war.

December 20, 4.10 p.m. The transfer of the British troops from Savla Bay and Anzac, under unexpectedly successful circumstaness, has given great relief and is regarded as an eloquent testimony to the skilfulness of our military leaders under the perfect guardianship of the Navy.
The withdrawal of such large numbers (possibly in the region of 100,000) is evidently one of the greatest feats of the whole war.
It is presumed, as there is no mention of Seddal Bahr, that the Allies intend to remain in occupation of the southern zons of the peninsula as a sort of Gibraltar.

December 20, 3.15 p.m. Reviewing the recent speech of Herr Helfferich in the Reichstag, the Vorwaerts urges the Government to declare how the money for the payment of the interest and redemption of Germany's war debts
can be raised.
The journal says the German war debt is now two thousand millions sterling, the interest on which will be a hundred millions Jearly, while redemption will necessitate another twenty-five millions. In order to meet these and the current expenditure, the income of the Empire must be more than doubled
The Voraseria concludes by stating that the interests of com sumers and industries will demand an abolition of import taxon after the war, which will considerably reduce the income of Germany.
