No one can have read the so- counts of the distreming accident which took place yesterday in the', lift of the King Edward Hotel without feeling that there is some- thing radically wrong with the state of affairs which permite such an unfortunate occurrence—not with the management of the hotel or the lift-boy, but with the general system prevailing. In Hongkong there is a very large number of these lifts, and it is really sarprie- ing that accidents of this nature are not more frequent, seeing that in few, if any, casos is there provided a door to the lift itself. It is certainly incumbent to provide dosra to the lift way on each floor, but when the lift is in motion there is no shield between the persons travelling and the side of the wall
which is next to the entrance.
That this is a source of danger to the life and limbs of those using the lift will be readily accaded by all. We have memories of lifts at Home where in most towns and cities it is compulsory to have folding net-work
