Io yian of the fact that Burma already contributes one third of the world's supply of this metal, which is of importance in the manufacture of munitions, it is necessary for Government to stimulate its output in every way possible, and in order for this end to be brought about power for its close control are necessary. Shanghal-Naoking Railway.
According to the returns of traffic compiled by the Shanghai- Naking Railway, the year has been a good onein point of receipt and number of passengers carried, the latter being given as $5,400,000 and the former s8 $2,441,000. During each of the months of January, March, and April, over half a million passen- gers ware conroyed to and from various places on the line. The So:ohow and Hangehow launch passenger trafic also shows im portant increases when compared with the results of 1913, an excess of over 221,000 passengers in all, or 25 per cent., being recorded which speaks well for the continual popularity of boat travel. As has been stated ele where, the terminal stations at Shanghai of bath the Kinngen and Shanghai-Nanking Railways are to be connected in the near future, and, with the extension of the tram system to meet the now exigencies, a continued in crease in passenger returne is expected.
