The War and Drink.
It is, perhaps, not to be wonder- ed at that the war has brought forth a big orop of legislative en- actments dealing with the drink problem. The duty on liquor has been tremendously increased, the hours daring which intoxicante may be sold have been cut down, and the familiar custom of "treat sunshine. ing" has been officially frowned upon. Some of these measures sanshine. are, without the least abadow of doubt, justifiable by circam- etances others are absurd to a degree. The temperance fanatics, of course, bail them with hysterical joy, fancying they see in them the near approach of the Milleniam. The capital, which they, and the Ohorches, have been making, for example, out of His Majesty the King's abstinence pledge can only be fully realised by those who bappen to have been at Home since it was announced. But oven- yet theas good folk are not satis fied: given an inob, they want a mile. That is the way with all fanatics, whether military or civil. England knows that to her cost to day.

It is true that, when the war is over, Britain will be able to faðs the world with a clear conscience in respect of her treatment of prisoners; we are proud that this should be so and would not willingly use it otherwise. But surely there is no reason why our national love of fair play to friend or enemy should be allowed fo betray us into a centimental solicitado for people who construe kindness as cowardice or effemincoy, and who laugh at us for ex- Tending towards them an amount of courtesy unheard of in Germany itself.
