The Panama Canal. The first year's record of the Panama Canal presents some in teresting festuroa remark: United Empire. The engineering dif ficulties which, in the nineties of last century, appeared insur mountable, have been greatly re duced by modern engineering science, but the views of the canal works confirm the belief

Leave Hongkong that the American engineere have not yet quite circumvented Dame Nature. During the year that the canal has been open, interruptions of traffic from landslides have been fairly |frequent, but sincs June, when a considerable fall was quickly re- moyed, the canal has been alear, It is the more disappointing for ahipowners, therefore, to be held up during the month of August and part of September, and the, whole question of navigation through the canal is being carefully considered by the underwriters. Obviously the risk increase the oost of freight, and tocording to the lateat American writer on the canal, Mr. Lincoln Hutchinson, the rates as at present calculated may attract shippers from Laver- pool to Wellington, N. Z., but not to Sydney, to San Francisco but not to Shanghai. As a matter of fact the official analysis of vessels using the canal show that only 50 were bound to or from the Far East, and the total number in only 1,088, of which 488 were American const wise ships and 467 British vessels. It is suserted that the American authorities' by setting their faces àgainst British agents who were prepared to look after the interests of ships pay- ing tolls and disbursements, checking accounts and facilitating their passage for a small foo-arð likely to prejudice the popularity of the canal, especially if they establish a monopoly of this form of business. American abips, it in asid, are free to employ their own agents.
