New Indian Seaports. While the war han seriously in- terfered with trade in India, as elsewhere, it is an indication, of the prosperity of the country to find the Government discussing two projecte relating to the con- struction of two new porte, one at Vizagapatom, on the East Coast, and the other at Cochin, on the Week Coast anys the Pall Mall Gazella.
These projects have boen
00 the novil for- some years, but at the outbreak of war in Europe many feared that the Government would not take them up for at least another.
"The steamers are all fitted throughout with electric light and decade. In the case of the Vizag have accommodation for a limited number of saloon-passengers, apalam project, however, the All steamers carry a duly qualified surgeon.

leave the financing, or, in other words, the construction and administration, of the scheme to the Bengal-Nagpur Railway, and aa the railway company has been the most ardent advocate of the project it may be taken for grant-**- ed that it will now make every effort to begin work at the har baar at an early date, Viga. gapatam is, roughly speaking, on the eastern coast line of India, midway between Calcutta and Madras, The harbour is not far from the Viza. gapatam
railway Blation, of having an excellent natural harbour. The port scheme han been pronounced by Sir John Wolle Barry to be "an eminent- ly practical one." The new port will foroiah an outlet for the trade of the Central Provinces, und a consid ablo portion of Orissa sai the madras Presidency. It will thus help materially in £96.10. relieving the congestion of trafilo, in busy times, at the port of Cal- cutts. The port of Cookin, when completed as suggested by the planters of Southern India, will Barve Mysore, Coorg, and other agricultural distriots in Southern Indio now sending their produce to foreign countries through Bombay or Madrea. For some time past, merchants in India bave recognised the necessity of opening new harbours to the trade of the country. With its enormous seaborne trade, India has only four sasporis equipped with mo- dora appliances for dealing with cargo, the ports of Calcutta, Bom- bag, Karachi, and Madras, leaving Buide Rangoon, the port of Burma, Calcatta deals with the trade of a tract of country approximately six times the size of the United Kingdom, and has the absolute mopoly of the jate exports of the country, besides possessing a considerable share in the tea, seeds, and other exports. As a aeaport, Bombay has a sphere of influence almost as extensive an that of Calcutta. Karachi deals with the grain and seeds exports. of the Panjab and Sind and Madras in the port for Southern India. As the oxports and im- ports of Indis. bave increased year by year, the problem of the congestions of traffic has sssumed alarming dimensions at the ports, Merchants asing the ports of Bombay and Caloutte, partion- larly, have been complaining bit. from the slow handling of the terly of the loss of trade arising exports and imports at the porta. The Port Commissonera of Bow- bay and Caloufta are, however, not to blame, as they have done everything possible for the expe- ditions, despatch of oargo. It is the immensity of the traffic at Bombay and Calcutta that has baffled their experts. It is not unasaal, during a busy year, waen the monsoon has been sat-

jetties in Oaloutta crammed from floor to ceiling with merchandiso of every description, the yards orowded with bales of jate or consigamente of seeds and
hides lying in the railway sidings laden with seods, tea, jute, or bidos and stringa of waggona
for days awaiting the removal of goods from the sheds to discharge their burden. While the waggons wait at the jetties, goods accumulate at the railway stations in the interior, and the merchants raise a wail of shortage of rolling stock. Similar conditions obtain at the port of Bombay. Vizagapa- tam is likely to prove a wariona rival to Caloutts. With the port of Vizagapatam in full working order, Caloutta will soon casse to tap the seeds and grain exporta of the Central Provinces. The de- velopment of the port facilities at Cochin will relieve the congestion of traffic at Bombay.
