A Five-Masters' Trip. According to the Sydney Even- ing News, the American Ave- masted sohooner George E. Bil- linge, from Paget Sound with 1,420,000ft of timber, arrived at Syduay on September 14 under command of Captain Thompaen. The vessel made the trip in 68 days, and has arrived in excel- lent trim. Her splendid appear- anco attracted attention sa she was lowed to Johnstone's Bay. Consigned to Scott, Henderson, and Company, the vessel had a foo weather passage until rench- ing the New South Wales coast when strong west south-west winds and heavy rain squalle impeded progress.

Sub-Committee of Canadian Cabinet on Lower Rate Question.

Ottawa, Sept. 17.-A ab- committee of the Cabinet, consist- ing of Sir George Foster, Misiater of Trade and Commerce; Hon. Dr. Isid, Hon. Robert Rogers, Hon. Martin Barrill and Hon. Arthur Meigion, Solicitor- General, has been appointed to consider the question of ocean transportation for the Canadian grsin movement and to co-operato with the shippers in endeavouring to secure a lower rate than st present prevailing, which is in | the neighbourhood of 26 coals,

There will be Do special difficulty in securing vessals, it is said, provided shippere are will- ing to pay the rates, but every effort will be made to sasure that this will be as reasonable as poesible.

Commenting apon the recent arrival of the Union Steamship liner Mosna-which is owned by the same corporation as the liners Niagara and Makura, which ply here from Australia and New Zealand-st San Francisco, California newspaper has the following:

The Moans, of the Union steamship Line, arrived from Sydney this morning with approximately $3,000,000 of gold aboard. Of this amount 510,000 dances were in bars and the balance in gold sovereigas. The Ventura, on its return trip, is expected to bring $5,000,000 more of gold. This, in ad- dition $5,000,000 ra ceived recently from Australia, will bring the total
