It is to be hoped that the ram- ours of an impending general election are unfounded. Yes it would he typically British- tpyical in a political sense, that ia-if such a thing were to come about very B000. Coalition

Cabinets do not work well in Great Britein. There is something in the political atmosphere of Britain which appears to blight the growth of such a hybrid, and it will come as no great earprise to students of history if the pre- sent Cabinet is comparatively short lived. But how the coua- try will view the prospect of a general election is another matter. The Bitch public of today is not the British publio of a year ago. Life for it bas taken on a more serious complexion.

The Victorian Age in Literature.

Mr. Chesterton thinks the Via torians were all mistaken.-mis- taken in their search for trath, in their freedom of outlook, and in their revolte against authority whether in religion or in politics; and he claims that a lesson should be drawn from these mis- lases. Newman (probably by reason of his conversion to Roman Catholicism, Carlyle and Dickens be regarde es the three great teachers of the Victorian Eta who tried to remedy these

mistakes, though he has to BC. kowledge that their philosopbia principles are mainly negative and not positive; that Carlyle'e injanation to tell the truth im plies that telling the truth is as esey as shelling pess that Dickens's plans of reform were startlingly petty and parcobial; ' and that Newman bed no eympa thies onteide his religion. After this a natural doubt arises a to whether the Victorians did mako say mistakes at all-wbether the mistakes do not lie on the eide of those following them, the greatest of all being to imagine that we are at laat on the right road for which the Victorians so often Kought in vain,

Dr. H. S. Hole-Show, the Pre- sident of the Engineering Section of the British Association, heeTM proposed the election of a per manent committee of the section, Srat, to undertake any work which may be of use in an ad- visory capacity or by research, or indeed in any other way for direct assistance in the war, and, econd, to organise science and industry 10 prosecute the trade WAT

will bo waged by Germany after pasos is declared. In supporting. bis proposal he said-It behoves every man who can do so to take bis absre in making ready for the torrific struggle Germany is cer tain to put up in the arts and manufacturos. Wo shall better appreciate what this competition will mean if we consider the marvellous progress made by Germany during the last. half. century in the erte and mano. factures. Although we cannot. say that this

sbsolutely measured by progress in the pro- duction of iron and steel, or even say that the corresponding rate of increase in production during that period by this country direct ly measures our progress relatively to Germany, still it does afford some indication in the case of the engineering industry. While | Germany's production of pig iron is steadily rising, even în son- parison with whole world output, the production of the United Kingdom is falling at a relatively more rapid rate than that of Gar many's increase,
