MR. GEORGE ROBBY AS NORTH-WEST FRONTIER LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

RECRUITER.

Comedian Makes A Grave Appeal.

To his role of popular comedian and, since the war broke out, of special coautable and hospital orderly, Mr. George Robey added on September 3 that of recruiting agent. He appeared on the plinth of Nelson Monument, and made short, serious, and pithy speech, Appealing for recruita.

a

Hr. Robey went straight to the point. He was not there as a comedian, he said, because this was a very serious subject, and he meant to speak from the bottom of

his heart.

Travelling up and down the country, he found what seemed to him to be a disinclination to take the war seriously. There was a section of the community that could not see that we were fight ing for our very existence against the most bloodthirsty horde of super-educated savages the world had ever known. The Germans had to be beaten to their knees, because such a calamity is the present war must never occur again on this earth,

"We are going to win this war, declared Mr. Robey, "even if we have to call upon the manhood of the country hotween the ages of 15 and 60. It is better to come forward than to be fetched, and there is one man in this country who, if he wants consoription, has only to go into the War Office and say so, and it will be done."

The reference was obviously to Lord Kitchener. The Stat man to volanteer had been invalidad out of the service, after having been wounded at the front, bal wsa anxious to make another effort.

It was anticipated that the balance of Aesete over Liabilities on the 31st, December, 1014, would amount to $2,828,375, but the sum actually brought to account was $2.810,473. The revenue for 1915 as revised is increase in the sum required for expected to yield $11,380,005 telegrams. A eum of $1,000 was than was provided, but it is probable that or $27,027 1038

I must explain, however, that after the Estimates had been passed last year, vary considerable economies were made.

A eum of $750,000 is estimated to cover the loss on Subsidiary Coins. This sum falls short to a considerable amount of the sum required in the current year for this service. There is some reason to hope that it may nevertheless be sufficient and I trust that this hope will be realised.

As regards War Expenditure. The five heads amount in all to $210,200, including a sum of 5B,ÚCO for the maintenance of Prisoners of War and their families. His Majesty's Govern ment have decided that each Colony should pay for the alien enemies interned by its Government and also, if it onn afford it, for alien enemies taken off ships within its jurisdiction. The question of defraying the coat of maintenance of prisonera inade in actual Military opera- bean tion has not actually decided.
