Cultivation la the New Territory, We know of several plots al |land beyond Taumati, hitherto nothing bat padi fields, bot now owned by Europeans in Hoog" kong who are utilising them for growing vegetables as well as fruit, the seed of the latter having a been imported. After oɔnsiderable experimental work the trees give every indication of bearing well ~ in this climate. Three large tracts of land at Fanling refisot the greatest credit on the owners. In en far as cultivation is con cerned, we feel ears the possibili tins of the now territory havO not yet been more than tapped and if there were a little encour. agement forthcoming for enthus eiastio amateur growers, we fool sare a great deal could be done to limit the demanda"of avari: cious compradores who seize upon any pretext whatever to raise the price of market commoditis.

General's relativer-the quibble that the new Nogi family is quite distinct from the old one is a mere subterfage.. In fact, the argument is destroyed at once by the sanouncement that the new Count Nogi has applied for the heirlooms of the late General to be handed over |to him, thus assuming himself to be a descendant of the General, Public opinion in Japan may be said to be altogether opposed to the action of the officials, but as Imperial sanction has already been obtained, the "matter far a somewhat diffioult one for the newspapers to discuss, although they mainly get out of the diff calty by laying the responsibility on the officials of the Imperial Household Department. "It would almost seem that the desire of the lete Count Nogi was considered. by the authorities as establishing a bad precedent, which it was not wise to pass unchallenged.

even
On the Russian side the papere strongly prutsat the friendliness felt for Sweden by its Blay neigh- -bour, und assurances of the abgeros of any sinister design on Rushis' part are frequently given. The Petrograd Novoye Vramya thas concludes a lengthy examina- tion of Rasso-Swedish relations : "Rowia never desired that Sweden should depart from her atriot neutrality: All she wishad was that Sweden should, for the sake of the past and the future of Russo-Sredish relations, pro serve striot impartiality. Bhe did not invite Sweden to launch out against Germany,
when the German anb marines grossly insulted Sweden by sinking Swedish ships. The same attitude toward Sweden was shown throughout the war by our Allies. The Sweden have mot appreciated thie fair and just astitado until quite recently, A. the Dagens Nyheter justly remarks now, there are two sets of sonies in Sweden, one for the Allies and quite another for Germany. “The battle of Gothland has rendered Sweden's good service by enabl- ing her to reconsider her attitude to the belligerents, not in the foggy atmosphere created by Gar msn agents, bat in clear daylight, This was sufficient to show the pro German elemente in Sweden in their true light,'
Oil Fields in Korea,
It is reported that Mr. Touds, of Sooal, sed Mr. Simmond, an American expert, are carrying out |a survey of possible oil-bearing fields in North Korea. The resulta nre expected to be published in November, and if the report in favourable, there should no longer be any complaints of the market being floted with idle money for which to investment can be found.
