The Norwegian Pericles which arrived in the Clyde on July 24, with a cargo of timber from dali- as for Glasgow, completed the voyage in the remarkably sho.l time of fifteen days. The Pericles,

Titan's Heavy Cargo.

When the Blue Funnel liner Tilan esiled from this coast for the Orient on July 21 she took with her one of the biggest car- goea of iron products which has been shipped to Chins or Japan in the history of the trans-Pacific. trade. Though there was still a little space left, the cargo not being balky, she was drawing 30.6 feet aft and no more could car loads of iron plates, frames, | be put, aboard. Foar hundred

Washington, July 23,-Count- ing only the cost of operation, of civil government, sanitary work and the administration and hand- ling of ships, the Panama Canal is now on a paying basis, accord-. ing to official reports, Receipta for May not only wiped out the deficit of $39,480 which had grown up since the opening up of the Canal trade, bat left a balance of $177,700, which works out a profit of $5 79 per cent, on the expenditure,

This, however, does not make any allowance for interests on the vast sum of money expeuded in the construction of the canal and from that point of view the receipts from tolls have not yet equalled the expenses. « Total Lossol Cable Vessel Report- ed by Niagara.
