U.S. Mercantila, Marine,

In the twelve months ended May 1,877 nierobant vessels with a gross tonnage of 179,450 ware built and officially numbered in the United States. These added to 142 foreign built vessels of 500,703 gross tons, give a total increste in the American mer chant marine of 1,019 vessels, of 680,155 gross tons, for the past ten monthe, which is considerably larger than the increase of any previous year,

American Shipowners in favour of a Subsidy.

A Referendum conducted the Chambers of Commerce of the United States as to the vaTIONS means of developing the American merchant marine showed that there was over-whelming opposi tion to the Government purchase, charter, or operation of ships, and an almost ananiinona senti- ment in favour of a subsidy to sot-off the difference in the work- [ing expenses of American and

The Pacific Trade.

The American flag says the New York Sun, will practically disappear from vessels in the Pacifo Ocean if the decision of the directors of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company to withdraw the company's fleet of steamships from the trans-Pacifio service after November 2 still stands. The fiset of 12 ships, it is said, will be driven from the Pacific by the burdene put on American |shipping by the La Follette Sea- men's Law. The law goes into adfoot on November 4. The pro vision of this law which is looked apon as most burdensome is that which farbide a ship to leave an American port unlesa 75 per cent. of het crew can speak the langu age of the executive officers, of the vessel. This prevents an American or European ship from using anfioieut Oriental labour to compete with Japanese vessels. In a series of statements which accompany the annual report of the company for the year ended April 30, 1915, Mr. E. P. Schwerin, vice-president and general man- ager of the company, vigorously attaoka the Seamen a Bill, the Labour lobby" that worked for it, and the Congress which passed it. The Congress of the United States, at the demand of organised labour, saya Mr, Sohwerin, has legislated to place the trans- Pacific traffic exclusively under the Japanese fing. It does not seem possible that the framera and promotera of this Aot could have contemplated so disastrous a result, yet from a study of the different requirements of the Act it is plain that the conditions to be complied with are such that
