July 31, 1.5 p.m. According to Renter's correspondent in Rome, the Pope's official newspaper, the Osservatore Romano, contains a letter to the belligerenta in to-day's iseas, in connection with the anniversary of the outbreak of war. His Holiness forvently appeals for a cessation of the war, and urges the belligerents to put away the matual desire for destruction and idle conflict, which can be accom- plished without armed violence. He emphaises the fact that the nations do not die humiliated and oppressed bat prepare to retaliate, transmitting hatred and revenge. from generation to generation. The letter concludes:**

A submarine has shelled the Leyland liner Iberian, killing five of the crew.

The Iberian was afterwards torpedoed and sunk. Sixty-three of the crew took to the boats and were aflot for several hours. Two died on board the rescuing steamer.
