London Finance,
The Straits Times London Correspondent writing under date

Of course, all this kind of thing je obaiter of the idlest description, but I must mention it to give some sort of idea as to the influences which are swaying public opinion. Speculation, which is the life- blood of the Stock Exchange, is dead for the time being and even when a venturesome buyer comes along as often as Lo he cannot Bacure the shares he wan's to buy. They would bave to be delivered and that is not always convenient. In normal times the dealer wald make a price whether he had the shares or not and by borrowing or otherwise be could keep the transaction open almost indefnite- ly until an acinal seller turned up, but nobody is selling now ualese he is absolutely compelled to do 80. The result is deadlock except in comparatively few stocks which are always changing from hand to band. 1 had the case this week of a buyer of 2,000 shares gutted about 25/and from one end of the market to the other only 50 could be found. Inquiries cut- side yielded no more than 150 additional and the deal was called off for the time being. A year ago I could have put the business through in five minutes on
