The Bureau Veritas Monthly Liet, published on April 1, of wrecks and casualties recorded in February last, annonnoes that, 34. sailing vessels were reported; na totally lost. 14 by attending, 8 by collision; while 12 foundered, 2 were abandoned, and 3 miesing: In addition, 3 were broken up or converted. No fewer than 79 Pailing vessels were damaged 18 by stranding, 6 by collision, 2 by fire, 14 by le ka, and 30 by stress of woother. The steamers totally lost were 65: 10 by stranding, 5 by collision, 4 by fire, while 33 foundered, 2 were abandoned, and 11 were missing. The steamera! damaged were 415, 92 by strand- ing, 98 by collision, 32 by fire, 33 by leaks, 89 by atreas of wea ther; while 71 reported injury to their engines or boilers.

Increase of Touuage,
The intervention of Italy means a substantial increase in the world's supply of tonnage. Ac cording to particulars published in Lloyd's List, 36 Carmaan vessela of 142,776 tuns, and 21 Austrian Vessels of 73,895 tons have been sheltering since last August in Italian or Italian colonial ports. Fifty-seven vessels of 218,871 tops which had been lying idle will now be able to participate in the world's commerce. Many of the enemy vessels detained in the Talian ports are fine liners, says the London "and Ubina Ex- presa. The largest ara the Moltke, of 12,000 tona, the Konig Albert, of 10,500 tons which are at Geroa, and the Bayern, of 8,000 tons, at Naples. Arrangements with Ger- man shipping companies were made by the London Chamber of Commerce at the beginning of the year for obtaining the delivery of British cargo from the German liners. A special license enabling merchants to make the necessary payments was granted by the British Government. Such oargo se has not been released would now presumably be the subject

Times of Juce 29. So far as WO Can ascertain to-day, Bangkok is nt well informed as to the exact significance of the aonouncement that the B.Lis commencing a fortnightly service between thie port and Singapore. But though information is lacking, and the boat announced is raid to be an
old Que, it is plain at any rate that the fortune of war is bringing an- other British line to Bangkok, and one that has the prestige of s great eastern company. If the capture of German trade ie not the matter of course that many people supposed at the beginning of the war, there iá no doubt that it will become more of a reality as the war goes on. The shipping trade of Bangkok affirds one in- stenos, for things will never be the same as before the war, and one may look forward with confidenos to the British flag taking a place in local shipping that will be in some measure commensurate with the British frade of the port. Nothing has happened, however, to give ground for thinking that any single flag will have anything like a monopoly in the future. In the old days, the Scottish Oriental and the "blue-funnel" lines did have a practical monopoly The earliest year for which we can at the moment find statistics is 1899 when the process of transference from the one flag to the other had been going on for some
