RUSSIANS BADLY MAUL THE ENEMY.

July 9, 1.40 p.m. Router's correspondent at Petrograd states that the front, on which the battle south of Lublin is proceeding, is practically idont-1915. ical with that from which the Austrian invasion was driven back at the commencement of the war. It begins at Joseiow on the Vistula, 26 miles due south of the fortress of Ivangorod, passes six miles north of Krasnik, and beads southward along the valley of the Bug to the beadquarters on the Zolotalipa or Golden Limetree River, 10 miles. This front between Josefow and Urzendova constitutes an ad- mirable Russian defonsive. The position is in a broken, wooded and mountainous country, The Russians have now the advantage of the railways and are fighting with their backs to Ivangorod and the Brestlitovak fortified line, while their adversaries are without railways and the country in their rear is now a roadless desert.

The immediate object of the invadera is to seize Cholm and The column marebing to Lahej to reinforce the British troops Lublin. The Ivangored railway was their centre, and the out-mar was delayed by water difficulties and the heavy going. Therefore itching wings in their anxiety to reach the railways, formed a deep was decided that the force at Labej should retire. The retirement salient which was badly mauled by the Russian counter-attacks, was most successfully carried out on the morning of the 5th, and joined the column: As the latter was suffering from heat and short- age of water, and the desertion of the Arab transport followers, it was decided that the whole force ehould fall back on Aden. The enemy did not attempt to follow.

July: 0, 11.10 p.m. The Press Barcau reports that several thousand Tarks with 20 gana, and a large number of Arabs, attacked, on the 4th inst., a small British force at Labej, Aden hinterland, which maintained its position until night, when part of Lahej was ablaze.

Our losses included three British officers wounded. A Turkish major end 13 Torks were taken prisonere;

GENERAL SIR J. FRENCH'S REPORT.

July 9, 11.15 p.m. General Sir John French reports that since the 6th inst. the enemy made repeated attempt to retake the lost trenches north of Ypres, but all counter-attacks were stopped by the successful co- operation of our, and the French, artillery.

"In the morning, after a bombing duel laating two days and two nights, the enemy fell back on the canal, enabling us to extend our gains. We capturad a machine gua and three trench mörtare. The enemy's losses were severo, particularly in the attempted counter-attacks.
