Men and Munitions. Testimony from all parts of England points to the enthusisem of the response to the appeal for munition workere. Men and women have enrolled in tons of thousands it the numerĻus offices, opened for the purpose and all gra- des of scaiety ars engaged in the work of turning cut "Pills for Bill." One day we are told that if the output goes on at the present ratą, we shell by Obristmas not only have enough for all our requirements bat will be able to materially sop- ply our allies. The next we are fold that the output is not enough, or that more workers are wanted, bioh is saying the same thing. Lastead of diminishing, controver sies regarding the unsatisfac

National Registration. Ma Asquith, when speaking on the National Register Bill, ex- pressed the conviction that eighty per cent of the people of the country were eager to do every thing which was asked of them' with a view to the successful pro- secution of the war. So far as tbeable-bodied male population is concerned we have no doubt that thousands of men who have hit berto refrained, from a variety of matives which candot ba branded as uupatriotic, would cheerfully
obey a compulsory order to go ander training for service in the 6ring line. The National Regis ter may rot actually foreshadow compulsory military service, bat insemoob ae, according to Mr. McKenna, its introduction is due to the necessity for discriminat- ing in recruiting in order that workmen necessary for [ts poblic needs should. not be withdrawn from their employment, the voluntary system of recruiting will clearly be put to a more severe test than has hitherto been the case. It means that perhaps a good percentage of volunteers otherwise eligible for military service will be rejected because the public needs demand that they should not be withdrawn" from their customery avceations. Whether the voluntary system at this stage of the war le equal to this test remains to be seen.

Germany and, the English":
Dye Industry, German scientists and mana- facturers, we learn, are at present paying particular attention - to new developments in England and the United States with the chemical industry, that embracing the production of dyes more, per hape, than any other. A Garizan expert, Professor Dr. Otto Witt, has recently dealt with the subject in va German journal, and his temperate and fairly reasonable remarks are by no means without interest. He emphasises the fact that for countries producing iron and coal, production on a large scale of coke je a matter of necessity, 80 is also the proper exploitation of the auxiliary products from coke- tar, from every point of view. The desire on the part of England and the United States to work up a dye industry of their own is therefore quite natural, and this desire,or determination, has, of course, been further strengthened by the present war having put a stop to the imports from Germany of ter dyes. The older English dye industry was exceedingly efficient for its time, and it worked under such favourable conditions affer the war of 1870-71 that it would have been difficult to enter into
comfal competition against it Lad it moved with the times,
