"Dredging at Shanghais
The dredging of the banks on the Shanghai side of the river just off the Nantão Band, a part where the free flow of the tida during the last few years has been gradually impeded, will be commenced shortly by the Whangpoo Conservancy Board. The enormous number of junks, rafts, timber, and beggar boats in this reach of the river has greatly increased the tendency towarda ailting and the Board hea longviewed the increasing throt« tling up of the river with alarm. The sharp bend at this place has also been the reason of the deteriorated condition of theriver in this reach and a reotification of the band will result from the work now planned. An agreement has been made with the Nants0 Municipal Tax Burean to dredge.. closs up to the re-adjusted nor molline, inside which a stretch of new bunding will be cone- tracted, with additional banding wbarfage facilities. It is expected. that the scheme will occupy at least nine months, Shipping and Engineering.
