that the Legislative Council voted the additional sum of £156.5.0 in aid of the Fund
for erecting a Chancel for St. John's Cathedral, as it was
found
impossible
to carry
out such extensive work with the
money originally granted.
This supplementary vote was, I understand, passed to meet
an equivalent amount which had been raised among the Community.
2. Regarding the increase of
£100
per annum voted to Mr.
J. M. d'Almada e Castro, it
appears
that this sum
was
unanimously passed by the Legislative Council, in consideration of his long and faithful
services,
extending over a period of thirty-one
years. He holds the post of
First Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's office, and his salary has remained
at £400 per annum since an
increase granted in March, 1858.
