LOG BOOK.

Steam Ship Service from Canada-

to Cuba.

The St. John Board of Trade is endeavouring to secure the co- operation of the various boards of trade in the Maritime Provinces, with a view to obtaining uniform commercial lawa for the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, failing the passage of a uniform federal law. The movement for a direct line of steamers between St. Joba: and Cubs is beginning to take shape. The Provincial Govern- ment is doing what it can to for ward the scheme, in the hope of fading an outlet for the surplus potatoes, a large quantity of which still remains in the hands of the farmers. St. John is the first city in Canada to embark upon a town planning scheme, and the resalt of the experiment will be awaited with interest. A plan has been prepared, including: almost all the suburban lands for s radius of three miles outside the city, and the Legislature will be asked to give its approval to the same,

The Suggested T. K. K. and. N. Y. K. Comblas, Tokio, May 28.-On the pro- posed amalgamation between the Tokio Kisen Kaisha and the Nippon Ynsen Kaishs, the Chugai Shogyo reports that the principal shareholders of the former com- pany met with President Asano, on Tuesday and decided to the effect that Mr, Assno open negotia- tions with the Nippon Yusen Kaisha. As long as the terms of amalgamation to be presented by the T, K. K. ie nct published, nothing can be guessed of the probable sttitude of the N. Y. K. toward the proposal, but an in- fuential member of the N. Y. K. is quoted by the "Chagai""to the effect that the amalgamation in not impossible. It may seem rather unnatural that the amalgamation talk has happened of the company having only South American service and San Francisco service and the company having diferent services such a European, Australian, North American and many other Chineso and coastwise routes. Supposing the difficulty from this cause can be solved, another difficulty is that the T. K. K. liners are main- ly passenger boats, while most of

K. management is all the more bent upon the policy to attach greater importance apon |freight business, as may be seen from the fact that all the bonta now ander construction are. intended mainly for freight busi- noes. Thus, the principles of both companies are entirely dif ferent, and it would be difficult how this difference of policy be barmonised by the amalgamation, This difference of business prin«. eiples was the cause why the Nippon Yussa Kaisha some time ago declined the offer made. through Baron Shibusawa, and it is plain that the N.Y.K. would similarly decline the offer if the terms of amalgamation do not suggest any means of harmonis ing this dinerence of prin ciples, especially because the N.Y.K. is now anxious to improve the business method with a view to its financial independence, and the amalgamation with the T.K.K. which absolutely requires aab sides would be quite inconsistent course of policy now
