The Metric System
One of the many changes which it is bored will be brought about as a result of the war is the universal use cf the metric) system. The advantages of stan- dardising weights, measures and monics in national and interns- tional trading have frequently been urged in these columns/ and exponents of enlightened public opinion, at homo and | elsewhere bave endeavoured in a variety of ways to push the oante." The outlook is most optimistio and it seems almost cartain that one of the results of the war will be a general departure from use- leas (radition and petty prejudice in favour of a system of calcula. tion which is so simple, con venient and logical. Never has there been so much interest dis- played in the metric system ás since the outbreak of the war.

The Veil of Secrecy,
For more than a week there has been a singular absence of new respecting what is happening on the British front in Belgium as well as in respect of the operations in Gallipoli. There is a comfort- ing old adage which assures us that "no news is good news. We trust it may be so in the prescat instance. The last news we had concerning the opera tions in Belgium was in an Amsterdam message, dated the 9th inst. which told us of "entr

movements of German troops" in the direction of the Yser Canal, and that in conneot- ion with this movement the Belgo- Da'ob frontier had been closed and barbed and electric wires had been run along the whole line of froutier, Thia zewa.. naturally put us all on the tenterhooks of
expectation, for what other moan- ing could it have than that no- other determined German assault on the British positions was im minent? We still wait for coa- firmation of these expectione.

Comments on the War.
Notwithstanding the mass of information published regarding the war it is indeed perplexing clearly to comprehend how the ituation really stands. We were told months ago that the German: were running very short of am- munition and there seemed good grounds for the belief. It also appeared to be a fact that, they were finding it increasingl difficult to obtain the necessary metale for a further supply of munitions. Still they are blazing away. There is no doubt of that and the only explanation is that the Teaton was much better provided with steeks of munitionsind wai material than was generally sup posed. They have also been able apparently, to get large supplies through certain central countries A more effective curb apon this latter cource is, happily, now being placed. Holland's restric tion of ber raw cotton expor should also prove a big obstacle in the path of Germany's futur supply of munitions, as the commodity forme an importan ingredient in the manufacture o certain combustibles. There car be no doubt that if the Tenton' power of further supply of muni tions could be dealt with effect ually a speedy termination would inevitably follow, Until the takes place, the Germeni, wil continue to be as destructive a possible, even thoughsus quite well that in the end for them is certain.
