Manchuria Timber Market.

аз

The comparative quiet in the building circles of South Man- charia has brought abcat a languor into the timber market. Hokkaido pina which, while the building 'cre ze was on, used to be imported to the amount of more than Y1,000,000 per annum, has decreared to between Y600,- 000 and Y700,000, of which about one-third ronsists of railway sleepers. The 8. M, R Manage ment, being wide-awake to the desirability of drawing a supply of sleepers from the country pear the Railway, ba's left no stones uníuràed for obtaining 28 much supply possible locally. The Company found a quantity of timber suitable for the purpose in the zone between 20 miles and about 35 miles north of Makden. The timber was mostly of small sizes, and the largest. pieces gave two sleepers at most. Besides the bad roads and poor transporting, services entailed heavy carrying charges, and ex- periments in this direction pros pered little. It is probable that the Kirin forests will come to be tapped for the same purpose in the near future, bat the question of transporting facility makea a lot of differer ca in this matter and must be fally gone over. The consumption of Yala timber- (mostly fir and pine) and Chang: chun timber (mo tly pine) is valu- ed at Y50,-00,000 and Y40,-50,000 per annum respectively." Yalu timber is, as a rale, well soaked in water, being rafted down the Yala. For this reason it is better seasoned and less susceptible to the climatic inficences than Chang- oliun timber, and is therefore more popular. The consideration of freights rendera Yaln timber more negotiable Tientsin way than Hokkaido timber. In fact the imports to Tientsin aro five or six times larger than those to Dairen. The prevailing dearth of available tonnage has raised the cost of transportation of Hokkaido timber by over 10 per cent., compared with ordinary times. Where the freight cost about Y220 per full cargo on board a junk of, eay, 100 koku, it is eaid to have come up to about Y200. With a cargo like timber, the! freight and other transpo tation charges for which cast higher' then it original valne, the recent rice in the freight has seriously affected the timber market. Manchuria Daily Nies.

Condition of British Crops An agricultural correspondent at lome writes:-The wia ther during Merch wa', on the whole, favourable to the growing eropa,. the comparatively large amount of sunshine and the drying winds chetting a considerable improve- mert in agricultural ounditions. -Except on very heavy land oarly sown wheat is looking remarkably well, and has made good progress in the last few weeks. The inte sown wheat, on the other hand, is still unsatisfactory; it is in many cases of a pour colour while many bare patches be seen. It has however, greatly benefited by the fine weather, and may still prove an excellent crop. The total area under wheat is estimated by the Board of Argiculture at about 10 per cent. larger than twelve moLths ago.
