Cotton Manufactures in the

United States.

So far the ooltan-manufñolur. ing industry of the United States basant experienced that incransä in the production of grole which wan predicted to result from the European war. It was assumed that the ecuation of shipments from Germany and Austria to South Amerinin gantrisa would creatan demand 'for' American- made antto i gnođain that quarter, and that there would so he an Axpansino in tride with Chinn. But thosa axneėlations 1ave not been" realized, the "explanation being the depression ralino in the countries referred to. Cari-. ously enough, the only important expansion in American cotton goode shiomanta since the cat.: break of war in das to the eggou- tion of ordera for Great Britain. and her Allies," The aggregate exports during the same perin! have tren less then in the corres- ponding mouths of 1913-14.

Russian trade with Japan.

Trado with Russia is brisk, lut Would be a great dan brieker

ware it not for difficulties gon- -neated with exchange. Exceptin the ammunition. traffic, the obytanie to extensions of trade is cot the difficulty of getting "ordera says the Mainichi, but the diffienity of getting cash. The probibition of experts from Rassian territory prevents trade being halanced by imports into Japan of Roya beans, bides, eto., ngd though the Vladivostok banke have plenty of rouble notes, these "have become practically an inconvertible currency. It host been suggested that the Bank of Japan undertake exchange and 80 relieve, commerce of its diff culties, but no very Fauguine hopes are expressed as to the. Bank's capacity or willingness to do this.

Mongolian Trade.

H. M. Minister at Peking has orwarded an extract from the Harbin Preas, from which, it appeara that the importation of ooda, of British and German origin into Mongolia from the fouth through Tientain and Kalgan has decreased. It is stated that about 80 per cent, of the whole import trade of Mongo- lis is in Russian hands, while in the trade in piece goods, cloth,

• sugar, iron-wäre, enamelled hollow-wara, matches and fanned leather, Russia bas obtained com- plete control. The writer of the article estimates the Russian abare of the total import trade of Outer

ongolia (about £1,287,000) to be about £950,000, and explaine that this expansion of Basso- Mongolian trade is due in a large measure to the great perseverance and initiative now being shown by Russian merchante in Mongolia,

British Trade and the War.
