"The" Mid-Amerionn warket lo New York has maintained a firm tone in spite of the decline in the Liverpool marker. "The latest, New York quotations are 38cents July and 0.72 cepte October.
Local cotton prices improved during the week, on accourt of fairly large purchases by the Incal mille. Arrivals are poor and this market olases firm.
Business in Indian yarn was of very small proportions. The local yarn market was firm, and about
·0,000 Eales are reported to have been cold.during the period.
At all the piece goods auctions, prices were steady, and the bid- ding was brisk.
Plantation Rubber Position. Mr. Joba McEwan, whoso opinion on any subj'ot connected with the rubber industry in well worth recording, spoke at the Batu Caves meeting last monik on the general trend of prices; etc. He said that the present position of the market was quite a satisfactory one and that the directors had taken advantage of it and sold forward fally 40 rer cent. of the estimated aroe, Thef war had seriously" fated the course of trading and it would be dißcall to estimate the ultimate effect of it whin penca was "rë- stored. factor in causing the increase has been the lower selling prices of 1914. The production of wild rabber is rapidly declining, mere ly because it is impossible to col- lect it to make a "profit at the price obtainable. Even" hård grade Pars, our chief competitor, is feeling the pinch, as is obvious by the recent figures of import- ation to the United Kingdom. From July 1, 1914, to February 28, 1915, the imports from Brazil have been only 5,180 tons, as against 8,034 tonn in the same eight months a year earlier, and every month of the eight shared in the reduction. It may possibly be that more went direct from Brazil to the United States of America, but if that is so, it has not prevented America from large- ly increasing her demands upon

War and the World's
Food Supply.
The lesson driven home by the Agricultural War Brok just issued by the Dominion Govercment of Canada is the great need of inertated prc- duction. Apart from the demand created by war conditions, prices have increased all round, the decrease in the world's production of both cattle and field crops being one of the chief reasons. The decline in the United States 1800 of #tock raised since amonnts to 10,000,000 cattle, 10,000,000 sheep and 5,000.000 hoge. At the same time there are about 20,000,000 more people to be fed in that country. The universal shortage of food pro- duets is realized more than aver before, and it has brought about | a condition in the agricultural world which calls for new methods and greater activity. It is felt in Canada, however, that on apcount of the large increase in wheat | pricea' there is a danger of farmers being tempted to diecon- tione growing cther crops and thus sacrificing their livestock, Every effort is therefore being "made by the Agricultural Depart- ments of the Dominion and of "the various provinces to impress on the farmers that forage crops and coarse feed in abundance mean production of flesh and milk; that the demand for cattle will be very great, and that there is increasing demand for milk- products, which can be placed on the Western market at a goodi profit.
A Big Gun's Lifetime, Supposing that an incessant stream of projectiles was fired frem a 12-inch gan, extreme old age would come and it would be worn out in twelve seconds. This interesting statement was made at the Royal Institution, London, by Lieutenant Colonel Hadcock, who was speaking on “ Modern Artillery." These hoge weapons, be said, looked overla ting, but they only lived" when they were being fired, and therefore their lives were extremely short shorter than that of a butterfly, which lived to the great old age of 24 hours.
