The total number and tonnaga of vessels entered at Shanghai during the quarter ended Decem❤ ber 31, 1814 was 2,727 ships of 2,009,223 tone, a decrease, in spite of the war, of only fifty-two. (chipe and 555,424 tone, over the
me quarter of the year before. It was anticipated that the shipping trade would have suffered more heavily than this, and the provent figures are reassuring. The total number of ccean ateaméra en-
tered was 912 abips of 1527,347 tons, a decrease of 171 ships and 516,064 tons from the previous quarter. Almost the whole of the loss, therefore, was in ocean tonnage. Of the total entered 40.4 per cent, was British, 27.8. per cent. Japanese, 19.9 per cent, Chinese, 4.3 per cent. American,, 2.6 per cent. French; and RussĪBU and Norwegian each 1.8 per cent. The total number and tonnage of river steamers entered was 304. ehips of 471,047 tone being a de- crease of fire ships and 5,470 tons from the same quarter of the year, before. Of the total 53.1 per cent, was British, 23.7 per cent. Japanese, 21.5 per cent. Chinese and other Bags 1.7 per cent.

The steamers Rajaburi and Quarts, captured from the Ger mans, have been chartered from the British Government by the China Navigation Company for service on the oast and will be put into operation immediately.
