RUSSIAN COMMUNIQUE
GERMANS LOSE HEAVILY.
A Petrograd common'que itntes:-
May 31, 6.30 am.
The object of the enemy'a prodigious efforts recently was the encircling of Przemysl. The Germans, after a desperate batile on the river San, occupied four days in attempting to change the direction of the offensive from the north east to the south east. They constructed fifteen bridges from Seniawa to Jaroslav, and transferred the whole mass westward leading to the supposition that the Germans were retreating, but just then General von Mackensan Esgan to hurl bis armies against the Russian positions between the rivere Lioubatebevka and Sao. Simalianeously, near Rady ano, on the left taak of the San, hundreds of thousands of icfantry, sup- ported by a thousand guns, attacked us on a front of fifteen miles. General von Mackensou wee indeed trying to repeat his manoeuvre in front of Lodz, but now using entire armies instead of isolated corps. The former fortunately are slower in their movemente and General von Mackenson's plan is still unfulfilled, though some of the German regimen ta have. alieady, lost three-quarters of their effectives.
General Irmanof, the hero of Port Arthur, ciusbed the garrison of Laisseoo' behind von Mackensen's army, and among the captures were cattle intended to revictual von Mackensen's army. While the Russians décimated the Austro-German armies endeavouring to mest Fon Mackenson in his turn to Przemyel from the south. The enemy have lost hundreds of thousanda since the 24th alone, and there are other favourable signe, nevertheless, it is yet premature to speak of the result of the battle, which is extraordinary in its intensity, abould be pointed out that the third Caucasian Corpa, captured 7,000 prisoners; this Corps was mentioned as being entirely an~" ihilated in Austro-German communiques, on the Wialoka last month.
