Mr. Shala (sistant engineer surveyor to the Marine Board) surveyed the vessel and his report was such abip to proceed that the authorities allowed the Captain Samuel Mortimer, master of the Montoro, deposed a the inquiry that on the evening of April 9 Pilot Winokler was piloting the Montoro. Knowing. that the pilot was strange to the ship, witness stayed on the bridge deck continuously until between 10.30 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. He checked the distances at Cairo- cross, Hannibal Islande, The checke talliod with Pilot Winckler's positions, and gave the speed of the ship at 11.7 knote.. At 10.12 p.m.the'. Montoro was ateam of Hannibal Islands. The pilot let the vessel ran oa for 6 minutes, which brought the Montoro exactly on the track recommended. Witness heard the pilot set the course S. 48deg. E., which he checked on the chart, and found to be correct.. At 10.20 p.m. he went below, and asked Pilot Winokler to call him at any time. At 1.5a.m. on April 10 the second officer called him, and said. "The ship is ashore, sir." Witness went on the bridge, and the first land that caught bis eye was Haggerstone Island. He had the engines stopped. took bearings of Haggerat Island, which bore 8, 56deg. W.; aleo of Clerk Island, which bore N. 05deg. W. He then know the ship was on Off Reef. Wit nese took charge of the ship at this juncture, and after having the wells and tanks sounded, ind finding them all right, he endea voured to get the ship cff. At. 3.49 a.m. the Montoro came off the reef, and proceeded at slow. speed until the tanks and wells were again sounded. They were found to have no water in them,"
