The Loss of H.M.S.. Triumph. The appearance cf a submarine in the Dardanelles must have been an unexpected event; at least, nothing has previously been men tioned in the reports from the Dardanelles of the actual presenco of enemy utmarizes, and it would be instructive to learn how this new element of danger hae been introduced. The Triumph makes the fifth bip-four of them British-lost in, these hazardous operations. It was evidently not anticipated that the perilous enterprise of forcing the Dardanelles could be achieved without loss of shipe, bat it is something to be proud of that rot a single ship has been sunk by the enemy's bat- teries. The loss of the Triumph makes a special appeal to car- sympathies in Hongkong, but we have the satisfacti: n of knowing that she has added to our caval history a record of magnificent achievement, and abundently justified the name that was given to her by the Bitish Admiralty. Another ship will take her place srd the majority of the men who have fought so courageously.in the Triumph happily live and will continue to fight in that un- daunted and "invincible spirit which has alwa, s datinguished the British Navy, nutil the end and aim in view have been finally and fully attained.

China Mail,

The Coalition Cabinet. There can be no doubt but that, on the whole, the new cabinet eelected by Mr. Asquith and approved by Hie Majesty the King, will be welcomed throughout the British Empire. Never in onr history was the need greater for te a coalition Administration to guide bus the destinies of the Empire than in st, the present juncture; end it. ja.matter for supreme satiefsotion that we have, -28 över, a large number of mon vast ability to occupy the respective positions at the head of the various departments. The Liberal Party since the beginning of the war, had, by common con- sent, conducted the affairs of the nation together with the tremen dour issues arising out of the war, with marked ability and in a manner that called for universal approbation. The Liberal Admi nistration, contrary to the expect i ation of many, never hesitated to use the entire resources of the nation, when: the honour of the nation demanded auch a sacrifice; and they did not hesitate to throw aside their pacific policy when the time was obviously out of joint for the advcoloy of such a policy.
