The Electric Battleship,

Proposals for furnishing cleat- rio propelling machinery for the United States battleship Califor nia have been opened by the Secretary of the Navy. Two bids were received from the General | Electric Company. The first was for machinery, including spare parts, weight in all-not to exceed 700 tons, at a cost of G. $471,000; the semond bid, amouuting to G.$457,000, was for machinery not to exceed in total weight 680 tone. The only other bid received was one from the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Com- paay for machinery, including spare parts, not to exceed in woight 492 tone, at a cost of G.$365,000.

Trisci Maru Refloated.

The Japanese steamer Taissi Mara, which was previously re po tea as being badly ashore, about one mile below Hakow, bas. been refloated. She was observed at noon on the 16th inat, taking. on board the banker coal eto, which had been landed on the adjacent bank to lighten the ship and facilitate refloating.

North China Coast Shipping.

Service.

A severe blow is expected to be dealt to the North China 0oasting trade, which is now maintained exclusively by Japan. ese shipping, in the event of a rupture taking place between Japan and Chins.

The Chingkes Co., having offices at Chefoo and Dairen, which works various coastwise services, with the s.s. Foolee Sang- lee, and Yunglee, now contem- plates to liecontinue these ser- vices and to have their vessela berthed at Dairen under Japas- ess protection. M. D. Neica.

Local Shipping.

Local freights saya the Bangkok Times of May 3, are still showing sn upward teadency. It is raport- ed that the Solun has now been" obariered for twelve months at the rate of 10,000 Straits dollars a month. Present rates to Singa-;
