The
Sugar In Szechwan, There is promise of very con- siderable developmentofthesugar Industry in Szechwon. Aoting Governor of the province has forwarded to Peking on im portaat memorial on the subject. of the sugar industry, in the course of which he states that over forty belons in the province have extensive sugar caliivation, and indeed sugar in the third mcat important agricultural pro- duct of the province. The striot- ly enforced prohibition of opium caltivation bas had a serious elleqt upon the land tax. Under Viceroy Chao Erb-Hein efforts were made to develop the industry in the province to take the place) of the opium onltivation, à sum of $150,000 being raised in the heien of Chachang alone, with the object of establishing, refineries on the modern principles.
The Revolution swept away all the advance that had been made, and now the Acting Governor, is anxions to recover lost ground ne well as to make an advance on what was then to have been done. He has revived the Organisation Department and is proceding with a scheme for the establish ment of the new refineries. He estimates that it will take $1,000- 000 to carry out the work on an adequate scale." Of this sum he has been able locally to raise $400,000 from official sources, and he is appealing to the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce to assist in the raising of the re- maining $800,000. The chief assistance he requires is definite sanation for bia soheme: De proposes to itsue 12,000 shares of $50 sech to be taken up both within and without the province, and with the funds thus raised to, commence an extensive scheme of sugar cultivation and refining. As the eam he has already raised is from ficial acurces, and the new funda are to be raised by public subscription, the proposed undertaking will be a joint: Goroinment and commercial con- ceru, The scheme is under discus- sion at the moment by the Minis tries of Finance and of Agriculture and Commerca, and it is under- atood that they are Btrongly inclined to favour it
Glass Manufacture in Manchuria.
The S.M.R. Oo, has been follow." ing the policy of encouraging the manufacture of glasanare in South Manchuria and has offered in some special cases to treat glassware consigned by the manu facturers only, which is second clase goods, as a third classartiole. Singular to say anya the 'Man- ohuria Daily News," none of the indigenous enterprises in this line of industry has yet prospered. A Japanese factory at Harbin was olored down some time ago, and was followed by angiber atị Changchun. A Chinese glass factory at Changoban, which w.really financed by the Bank of China but was managed by the Kiria Provincial Bank, lost the major portion of its paid-up capital of 8, Y10,000. Its opera« tion was suspended and the man- agement has confined its attention to disposing of what stocks it now holds. Ita final collapse is zegarded as a question of the immediate future. The other glass factories are no better off. The chief articles of glasware put out on South Manchuria are lamp-chimneye, lamp-shades. oil- holders, elo. They commend an extensive sale, but the thrifty Ohinese are careful of their oil during the warmer months when daya are longer, and the demanda for those articles are very low. The demands markedly rise B9 nights lengthen with the advent of cold weather. The cold helps to raise breakage. The Chinese masses usually buy their wants during the produce se 100, and for this period glassware is in lively request. However, soon from the dealers' point of view, fairly good business kept up dur- ing the produos season only hardly Bafices to make their trade pay.
