LOG BOOK.

The Panama Canal Although the obstruction in the Canal has been lifted, and shipe are again passing through the out, there remain a few shipa in Balboa Harbour awaiting pamage through the Canal. This is due to the number of ships which arrived I while the Canil was closed, and -small number of Canal pilots on the'istbman. When the Canal was re opened afterthe slides had been removed, some of the pilots who wers on vacation and spending their leave on the isthmus, and who knew the prevailing con- ditions, volunteered their cervices to pilotships, and their offers were acospted; and they wont back to their regular duties in order to pre Tent shipa being delayed longer.

be given to it as a warning to those commanding and officering our merchant vessels :—It is very pleasing to see that the British |ships are holding their own against submarines. The Ger mann in obarge of thpas oraft must have, the warprise of their lives when they son ships head for them at full speed. Last Friday night, whilst on a voyage from Southampton for St. Malo, and when about mid-channel we were slowly overbaaling a steamer carrying full regulation lights bat a very powerful stern light. Times like these such a powerful light made me suspicions. (1. imust mention we were only carrying side-lights). When about two miles distant the steamer started calling up on Morse Lamp: bat we did not answer. After a short interval "Want Assistance Was spelt out very slowly. The data": were long and the dashes very long; in fact just like a foreigner would eigasl. We switched off our lights and turned around to steam away from her. We noticed two other steamers in the distanca. If a ship was really in distress there would be rockets fired, blue: lights shown, whistleblowing, and various other means of making known that she was in want of help. She was a veseel of some speed. We were steaming sixteen,
