be given on live floors, it would be desirable to have two Buildings of two floors each, besides a basement, rather than one of three floors. The Executive Offices i.e. Residences for Resident Surgeon, Apothecary; Quarters for Wardmaids, and servants, Kitchens etc. etc., would be better not placed under the same roof with the Wards; and the most convenient situation for them will I consider be found adjoining the Berlin Femnating sluice on the Eastern side of the ground. They should be connected to the Main buildings by covered ways.

The Wash house with drying green, and Dead house etc. would probably be placed on the opposite or Western side.

The Verandahs should be 12 feet or at least 10 feet wide, continuous, and uninterrupted by Water Closets, Baths, etc., around the whole Building, and to all the floors, where there are wards.

Water Closets, and Bath Rooms, might be provided in small Towers, at each of the angles of the Building, and connected to it by the Verandahs.

No wards should be on the ground floor. It is absolutely necessary in this climate that all rooms inhabited by Europeans should be raised at least 3 feet off the ground. Hongkong is noted for its granite which is of an
