News from German sources' is. noteriously unreliable, and there may be no foundation. for an al-g legation published in a leading London paper and issued by t German sgency that Mr. Kamaay Macdonald has described the evidence of the witnesses given before, the Belgian and French" investigation commitless as hys- terical.If this is true it means that Mr. Macdonald is of the opinion either that no outrages have been perpotrated by the German troops or that they have been grea ly exaggerated. What is noteworthy is that the labour leader appears to have'tffered no denial of the statement, and the naturalas- sumption is that he is prepared to father it if he did not actually roake it. The policy of the Britiah Government has always been to let agitatore agitate and to inter- fere with them as little as possi ble, presumably on the ground that if their particular form of bysteria found vent in talk it would not take the more violent form which is commonly in evi dence in cther countries; and that policy has all along proved a wise

War-Prophecies Pat to Proof.
All sorts of settlements ofüh war, we read in the Literar Digest, have been supplied by prophecy, and no doubt many anxious souls pin their faith to thean in place of more definit assurances. Prophecy began its work at the very outset, and wide spread currency was given to the prognostications of the late Coun Tolstoy.
