Now Tariff for Chinese Products.

The following now tariff bas been issued by the Chinese Rev-| enue Department governing the export of home manufactured goode:-(1) Chinese goods re- shipped to China after having been exported should be exempt- ed from further taxation Chinese merobaate aboutd claim such exemption. (2) The expert far on native goode and hamboo articles manufactured in Kisngiu for export to foreign countries should be entirely exempted from taxation. On ropes, etc., only half of the usual rate will be levied. After having paid the tax at the first Customs House and the first Likio station through which the goods pass in transit, no further tar should be imposed on these gcod», (3.) In order to avoid in- Convenience and loss accruing to the merchant by the use of taels in the payment of the taxes, all tazea are to be paid in dollars from the Let April at the rate of $1.50 for each silver taet.

Shanghai Coal Report: Meter. Wheelock & Co.'s report for the fortnight ended April 1 states that there has been very little business done, as ex- change has been very unsettled and has declined, whilst freighta bave cor.tiaped to advance; there is not much demand from Chinese) dealers us the winter-season is now drawing to a close. In Japan the larger consumers, thinking. that coal-prices have reached the.. bottor, are inclined to make can.. tracte for lengthy periods of one or more years at the ruling rates and be, market consequently shows signs of firming up and thie is bound to re-act on the Shanghai market in due course. Owing to the impossibility of obtaining teamage at a reasonable rate, prices for Kaiping 'coal for future contracts must be ad- vaner'd. It Las been possible in past years to defend to a certain extent on "stray" tonange but, nouo iefering at the present time. Stocks remain small.

Shanghal Cotton. Market." Mr. A.. B. Rovenfeld's Cotton Market Koport for the work, ond- ing 1st April 19 5 is an follows- China Cotton. The general out- Icok during the past week cannot be said to have aadergone any decided change when the situation is considered in its assentiel festurer, although the question of the size of this crop remains a prot lem as in former yours. The experience for the last four or five) weeks and the tenacity with which the farmere have carried out their idea of marketing the orp gradually, are not encouraging to those who have counted on a flood of distressed Cotton being sold at any price. The situation has fully confirmed my argument of the last six or seven years that conditions in the interior marts have changed and that the market- ing of the orop is no longer gos- erned by the necessities of the farmers, but their desire. In or der therefore to induce the far- mers marketing their Cotton s little more freely, the buying houses at Nanteo have advanced eight cents per picul on their form. er buying prices which has had some effect, and commitments "within the last forty-eight hours increased some 25 per cent. against those for the past weeks. As to whether this advance "in- price will bring farther larger Rupplies of Cotton on our market from the interior remains to bo seen, in view of the fact of the approaching activities for the new erop, in which case they may want to realise "bard cash

to

meet their incidentals, when we may look forward to their parting more freely with their holdinge. Meanwhile the market will cop-i tinue to be ruled to a great extent by the developments of the bolding policy of the farmer. From past experience they have shown that their financial position| is all that can be desired and that they can also control, the price of Cotton to a great extent, and it| will not do to be too sceptical as to their power this season.
