Charles styled them, "our brothers of the sea. He said that owing to shortage of cruisera, small craft, and destroyers at the commenc8- ment of the war, the Admiralty had commandeered for the Service about 2,500 vassele; many of these were doing cruiser and patrol work, carrying out their duties in that loyal and energetic. manner characteristic of the officers and men of the Mercantile Marine. A large proportion of those vessels were trawlers and drifters occupied in duty of the most dangerous description, namely, creeping and sweeping for mines. Their success has been splendid; although they had lost a number of vossels and men, there was no cessation of their gallant activities.
The officers
and men of the Mercantile Marine hid added to their splendid. traditions as seamen, and the engine-room departments had, by their indomitable pluokand readi❤ ness of resource enabled the ass- men to carry out their duties, San Francisco £45."
The gcod comradeship between the Loyal Navy and the Mercantile Speolat Rates given to NAVAL & MILITARY, CIVIL SERVANTS, MISSION-Marine has been exemplified in ARIES ste.

changed hands recently at prices which indicate the high value placed on tonnage likely to be available while the present trade conditions continue. Nearly all the tonnage which was being built on speculation, and also that on hand originally for firms. in enemy countries, has now it is understood, been disposed of. Japanese Steamer Strikes a Reef,
While entering the port of Chemulpo on March 15 the Japan-- 960 steamer, Kiho Maru struck a' reef near the mouth of the har- bour three miles south-east of Gatsabito Teland and sustained serious damage to her bow. The vessel, which was loaded with sleepers, was refloated in a water-. logged condition but made port safely, where temporary repairs were carried out Bhipping and Engineering.
