mercial News, as the prominent lines are suffering serious financial losses through their ships lying idle in various ports, the most prominent example being the big Hamburg-American steamer Vaterland which has been tied up at Hoboken, N. J., since August Jat. In this connection it is in- tereating to nota that in the period of thirty years from 1884 to 1914, size just about 50,000 tons. In trapaatlantic linera increased in the former year, the Etruris of 8100 tons, with a length of 501 feet, was brought out; while, in the latter, the Vaterland, of 58,000 appearance. The vessels that led from the former up to the latter tons and 920 feet long, made her
were the Majestic (9100 tons) built in 1889; Oceanic (10,000 tone), built in 1890; Baltic (24,000 tone, 1904; three years later, in 1907, the Mauretania, of 32,000 tons, came out, and in 1911 came the Olympic, of (46,360 tone). The first vessel of over fifty thousand tona was the Imperator (52,500), which preceded the Vaterland by a year. There is no ship under the British flag of 50,000 tons, the largest being the Aquitania (47,000), The largest vessel under the American flag is the in the Pacific trade, while our Minnesota (27,718) ten years old, largest in the Atlantio trade are the Finland and Kroonland (12,770) built in 1902. It neede no further commentary on the weakness of our flag on the sea than the above statistics to any thinking American.
