mercial News, as the prominent lines are suffering serious financial losses through their ships lying idle in various ports, the most prominent example being the big Hamburg-American steamer Vaterland which has been tied up at Hoboken, N. J., since August Jat. In this connection it is in- tereating to nota that in the period of thirty years from 1884 to 1914, size just about 50,000 tons. In trapaatlantic linera increased in the former year, the Etruris of 8100 tons, with a length of 501 feet, was brought out; while, in the latter, the Vaterland, of 58,000 appearance. The vessels that led from the former up to the latter tons and 920 feet long, made her
