· Freight.
For some time past, freights have been moving up, owing to the scarcity of tonnage for Eur ice, says the N. C. Daily News. The China Homeward Freight Con ference has potified shippers that the rate of freight on the follow- ing cargo from Shanghai to direct porta has been increased from March 13 av followay seeds wheat, beans, peau, groundnuts) with abelle, groundnuts without shells, pulse und kaolings, 75 per cent,; all other cargo 20 per cout. The additional rates of freight from coast and river peris for shipments via Shanghai or by direct loading steamers have been increased to 10 per bill of lading ton. The coast freights are also hardening because even the few} stes mere plying at present are being transferred to the home service. In spite of the increase in freights, exporters find it bard to get any tonnage at all. What the effect of the presout rise on the! export trade will be, time alone will show. The Azahi notes that the shipping season bas opened for the Indian line, and a want of more steamers is felt. Consequently, the freight. between Japan and Hongkong will be increased by 15) per cent, from April 1. Toe rates for pots west of Rongkong are to be increased is proportion,

A telegram has been received by the Communications Department, says the lauki, stat ing that the conference of steam- ship owners running steamets between Europe and Asia has agreed to increase freighte br- tween Europe and the Far East by 72 per cent, on cereale, 31 per cent. en beans, and 86 per cent. on general cargo. Prices in England.
The rise in prices in England, which had proceeded more or le-s steadily since the end of July, took a monstrous jump during January, with the result that the Economist Index Number bas. reached the highest figure record- ed for 13 years, the corresponding figure on July 1. 1872, bring 3054. The total Index Number. isnow just over 3000, representing an increase on December, 1914, of over 9 points in the percentage figure. When we reflect that this means a fall of over 7 per cent.) in the purchasing power of wages, no one need wonder if an outcry should rise from hundreds of thousands of humble homes. The zise of prices ia fairly evenly dis- tributed through the various groups, but la most marked in the care of icodstuffs. The largest rise bacccurred amongst cereals, which are being quoted at the highest prices recorded for many
long year, During the last week of January whoat pricea be- came a little easier, but English wheat is still in small supply all over the country. It is worth nating, however, that the percent- age of the last United Kingdom crop which bus teen marketed iä a relatively small proportion of the quantity usually sold during; the first six months of the season, The abrence of supplies from Ransia is ounbling American ex- portera to maintain the speculative rates which they are now charging.
