In view of the condition of affaira disclosed by incidents like the above, it is not likely that the Allies can hope for any active assistance from Portugal in the war in Europe. A country which is torn within itself, and which seems to be always on the verge of another revolution, has enough to do to look after its own interna al troubles. Indeed, it is prob able that this fact was known to Germany when a demonstration was ordered in Angola. Portu guese papera declare that severo fighting has taken place in that colony. A considerable number of Portuguese bave been killed, and it is stated that the Germans have been driven back acrose the border. It may be the osse that the rather uncalled- for attack by the Germans wAS simply a move. to distract Por tugal's attention from Europe to Africa. As it is, a fairly large proportion of the Portuguese army has left for Angola, and this fact, coupled with the internal dissension, bes enabled Germany to achieve whet was in all likelihood her object.
