Much has been written and saidð with regard to the utility of the submarine in modern warfare That they are a very effective factor cannot be denied and many are asking why we do not mak more use of our submarines see ing that we possess more than Germany? The answer to the question lies in the peculiarities of submarine warfare. It is fuatile to draw a comparison between. the two units of suomarines by the number of ships sunk, as we have many ships on the ecua compared with Germany and.. moreover our ships are constantly passing points well within the radius of a submarine with a base oo the contineat. Considering the number of ships we bare, Germany is doing comparatively litte in the way of crippling our trade and certainly not as much sa one might have expected from her campaign of "frightfulness."

Thesedepo sits ara calculated to contain some 3,000,000,000 tons. The working of the Briey deposits dates from comparatively recent years, from 1893, although the earliest con- cession from 1884. In addition

The importance of these vast minette ore deposits in French, as well as in German, Lorraine will only be fuky realised as the phosphorus containing iron on, thanks to the growth of the Thomas process, become a more necessary raw material.
American Courthouse Dynamited: Irvine, Ky., Jan. 23.-A obarge of dynamite exploded last night. under the Estill County court- house here, practically destroying the structure. The explosion shook the town and broke a num- her of windows. Nobody was injured. A provious attempt to destroy the building, a two-storey. brick atracture, was made in December, 1913, when dynamita was exploded in the corridor causing alight damage. The authorities have no clue.
