British Force Fights Turks and Persians,

March 8.
As Turkish troops, together with Turkish and Persian irregulars, had been gathering to the west of Ahwaz, a re- connaissance in force was made from this town on the 3rd. The enemy was discovered in great force, numbering about 12,000,
Repeated attempts to surround our party were defeated, and a retirement was effected, aftor punishing the enemy severely. The British and Indian losses were 62 killed, 127 wounded; while the enemy lost from 200 to 300 killed, and from 500 to 600 wounded, including several obiefs.
On the same day, a cavalry reconnaissance was made in the direction of Nakails; 25 miles north-west of Basra. A parly of 1,500 hostile horsemen was discovered, and drawn on to a concealed position held by infantry with machine guns and artillery. March 9.
On the 7th, French troops carried German trenches north-west of Souain, taking 50 prieovera. Between Perthes and Beausejour we gained from 400 to 500 metros. Several officers have been taken prisoners. German prisoners declared that onr artillery, on the heights of the Meuse, severely damaged a 42 cm. gun just put into action, and which had to be sent back to the rear for repairs.
We have progressed north of Badonvillere. The Germans suc ceeded, by a violent counter-attack, in gaining for a short time a footing on Reichackerkopf ridge, hat were dislodged by French chasseurs, who now hold the position. The enemy's losses were very heavy. A German attuck delivered south of Burnhampt station (in Upper, Alsace) failed.

Admiralty's Announcement with Regard to German Pirates,
March 9, 15 a.m.
The Admiralty announces that it does not feel justified in extending honourable "treatment to the rescued officers and crew of the sunken German sobmarine U8, as they are probably guilty of atracking and sinking unarmed merchantmen.
The Admiralty emphasises that persons against whom such charges are pending cannot be accorded distinctions of rank or be allowed to mingle with other prisoners.

Admiralty Report on Dardanelles Operations.
March 9, 12,40 ̊a.m. The Admiralty makes the following announcement: The operations in the Dardanelles are progressing, favoured by fine weather.
H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth and other British battleships were on Saturday engaged in re-attacking the forts in the Narrows, by indirect are across the Gallipoli Peninsula, while an Allied squadron fired on Fort Dardanus and the concealed batteries from inside the Straits.
Some of the British ships were hit, but only the slightest damage was incurred and there were no casualties.
II.M.S. Lord Nelson and B.M.S. Agamemnon on Sunday engaged the forts in the Narrows by direct fire, and silenced two of the forts after a heavy bombardment.

Naval seaplanes in locating the concealed land batteries-per- formed magnificent work. Flying sometimes very low, they were repeatedly hit, but none were lost and only three of the officers wera injured.

A Havre message reports that the French trans-Atlantio liner La Touraine has arrived in port, the fire having been extinguished.
M. Zaimis Declines Premiership.
March 9, 4.15 am.
A despatch from Athens reports that M. Zaimis has declined to form a new Cabinet.

Russians Sllence Black Sea Batteries..

An official report from Petrograd states that the Black Sea Fleet has bombarded Zrnguldak, Eregli, Kiliwli and Kozlon, silencing the batteries, destroying the coal-wharves and einking eight steamers.
