States specify the designations and marking of spades on vessels, and these have been followed in the rules for canal measurement. Each room should be designated with the terms appearing on the third page of the certificate, under the healing, "Deductions from Gross Tonnage," so that the certificato may be readily checked. Small lettering on plates is all that is necessary, and most vessels have men on board who are capable of doing Mar. at 1 pm. the making.
