The Anchor-Brocklebank Line steamer Mahanada, 7,200 tons, which recently arrived at Calonita on her maiden voyage, is the Jargest geared tarbine installation that has come to the Esst. The propelling machinery consists of sa H. P. and L. P. Parsons re- action turbine, geared to the main Propeller shafting which gives a stern turbine is incorporated in the casing of the L.P. turbina. These are capable of developing a maximum of 4,000T.H.P.,giving the vessel a speed of 13 knote. The great advantage derived from this combination of turbines and sumption, about 15 per cent, gear is the reduction of coal con

saving being effected as compared with reciprocating engines of a similar power. Steam is supplied by two large double-onded snd one single-ended boilers, which, together with the propeller shaft- ing and auxiliary machinery of the latest type, were fited by Meters. David Rowan and Co. of Glasgow. The maiden trip was highly satisfactory, an average speed of 13, knots being main tained. It is understood that two more vessels of similar type are now building for the same owners.
