In the meantime,

Government House

circulated by

at present.

any

one at Government House,

your

statement is altogether

incorrect.

Moreover the reports, which

did reach Government House,

as well

as most other Houses in the Colony

- that there is a

legitimate

Madame Chopra, but that the lady

introduced

as such in society

here is not that person.

Your opposition

to that rumour,

personal denial, and have published it in the local journals. Whatever be the weight

of that denial, the Governor

neither add to nor

subtract from it,

is not called

to do so.

His Excellency is glad that you

have given

such unqualified contradiction to the rumour. It will also afford the Governor great satisfaction to ascertain from independent sources

that there is not the slightest foundation

for so improbable a report.

I have &c.
