cotton: Spot. 6th inst., .05; last work c.7,80, Cotton prices inve continued to advance, and have been well above the highest
market point since the opened on Nov. 6, spot Mid- American being quoted at Liver- pool Jao.4, 4'71; 5th, 474; unsi Bib, 4.74 It appears likely that there will now be some recction. which is only to be expected aftar such surprising gain. The position of the raw material is very abacrre. The tone of the. Piece Goods, muket in Matches: ter continue generally healthy, but business is made (x remely difficult by the advance in values, and in many quarters has bers checked. The demand for clob is more general, and India not now the only market to the fore. Shirtings have been booked in fur qui niities, ned Dhooties are now being enquited for, bat the limits red are rather too low. China is doing a little is heavy goods. The colour di culty for Triple and Dyed Gords becomes more acute, and it is not wafe to book business without astoilmente in hand. The non- her of colours unobtainable daily business increaser, und tha -threatens to come to a 61andstill unless latitude is given by the importing markete.

Business in Shanghai.
Mesare, J. P. Bisest's Shure Report' dated Shanghai, Jan. 29, Bays:The boying element on the Iccal market is strongly in evid- ence, practically all rates remain- ing firm with an upward tendency. Despite the fet that the China Now Year cative settlemont is last approaching and that one might. consequently expect a lull in the briek demand for abarea, the maket remains buoyant. The demand for shares is no doubt due largely to the accumulation of unemployed funds caused by the dislocation of ordinary trade, but the increasing confidence in Lang- kate and the better Rubber out- look may certainly be regarded as contributory factors. In sympathy with the steadily maintained increase in the cutput, Langkats improved to Tle. 43. Coltons All · Insurance rempia steady. and Sture shares are wanted at current rates. Trama are rather easier at Tls. 07. Debentures are eagerly sought for,
Market for Indigo in China.
The American Consal-General in Shanghai reports that indigo is one of the chief imports into China, Germany having been the principal ecurce of supply for about 40 years. In 1913 & net total of 42,610,000 lbs., valued at $7,022,5/1, was imported into China, an increase of 14,359,200| lbe, and $1,576,311 in valuation "over 1912. For the first wix months of 1914 a total of 22,687,- 597 lba. was imported into Shanghai, an against 38,821,598 lbs, for the preceding 12 months, Of the seven firms handling in- digo at Shanghai, one is American and six are German. To lead- ing German houses practically. monopolise the trade, and, it is alleged, largely control the matter of market prices. In some inst ances indigo is shipped direct to Tsingtau, Hankow, Newchwang, Focehow, and Canton, bat Shang- hai is the chief distributing centre. The manufacturers of indigo have! expert obemists attached to the distribating offices of their agente in Shanghai, who study conditions and cater to the racial peculiarities of the Chinese in the matter of coloure. It is said that the offices are at present well stooked, and that the war will not interfere
