Itsubsequent ly transpired, however, that they were underorders to investigate on the ground the actual volumes of both exports and imports with a view to raising the Customs chargea in operation at that port. According to the existing plan, three kinds of new taxes under the titles of port due, likin tax and surtax, are to be imposed in addition to the ruling Custome tarif. This, if given effect, would mean an additional burden upon the exporters and

this plan was deferred through a protest made by the Chinese Guild who looked upon the proposed ohange as a serious blow to the welfare of the port. We may add, in passing, that the Lungkou Customs lie under the jurisdiction of the Maritime Castors, Chefoo, and the port stands next to Chefoo in importance on the northern coast of Shantung.
